In Japanese folklore, foxes (or kitsune) are often portrayed as mischievous or even malevolent, with the ability to shape-shift and deceive humans. The nine-tailed fox is considered a particularly powerful and dangerous type of fox spirit, with the ability to cause earthquakes, control the weather, and create illusory worlds to trap humans.
The nine-tailed fox had been causing havoc and destruction in the area, and Kazusanosuke Hirotsune was tasked with defeating it. In the woodblock print, we see Kazusanosuke engaged in a fierce battle with the nine-tailed fox, wielding a sword while the fox lunges at him with its claws and multiple tails.
