Sumbha and his brother Nisumbha were powerful demons who conquered the three worlds and drove the gods out of heaven. The gods, desperate to regain their power, turned to the goddess Durga for help. Riding on her lion mount, she waged a fierce battle against Sumbha and his army of demons.

After an epic battle, Durga was able to slay him with her trident. With the demon king defeated, the gods were able to return to heaven and reclaim their power. The story of Durga slaying Sumbha is often seen as a symbol of the triumph of good over evil and is celebrated every year during the Hindu festival of Navratri.
