We find our hero, Ario Maru, on the seashore, sword in hand, struggling with a gigantic pink octopus while on his way to Kikai-jima, to find his exiled master, Shunkwan. The original wood-block print was created in the mid-19th century during Japan's Edo period and is part of the series "The 108 Heroes of the Suikoden." Ario-Maru is shown wielding a sword and standing tall and determined, ready to take on the monstrous creature.
Utagawa Kuniyoshi was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. Kuniyoshi's subjects include many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical creatures. He is most-widely known for depictions of the battles of legendary samurai heroes.
