However, they soon realize that they can't accomplish this task without the help of Vishnu. Vishnu offers to support Mount Mandara on his back while the Devas and Asuras churn the ocean.
Churning the ocean reveals precious treasures, including the goddess Lakshmi, the nectar of immortality, and many other divine beings and objects. But, it also summons a deadly poison called Halahala, which threatens to destroy everything. Vishnu, in his Kurma (tortoise) avatar, drinks the poison and prevents it from spreading, thereby saving the world from destruction.
