Sohni and Mahinval is one of the great tragic love legends of the Punjab. Sohni falls in love with Mahinval, a buffalo herder, but the relationship is forbidden by social difference and family control. Because they live on opposite sides of a river, Sohni crosses the water at night using an earthen pot as a float so she can meet him in secret.

Her nightly crossing becomes a symbol of devotion, a willingness to risk everything for love. When her family discovers the affair, they replace her baked clay vessel with an unfired one, and it dissolves in the river. Sohni drowns on the way to her beloved, turning the story into a legend of passion, betrayal, and sacrifice.
