According to legend, Gyalpo Pehar is a gyalpo spirit who was subdued by Padmasambhava when he arrived in Tibet in the eighth century. Padmasambhava is said to have put all of the gyalpo spirits under the control of Gyalpo Pehar, who promised not to harm any sentient beings.
In the seventeenth century, Gyalpo Pehar became the protector deity of the Nechung Monastery in Tibet, under the auspices of the Fifth Dalai Lama. Since that time, Gyalpo Pehar has been revered as a powerful and benevolent force, and he is often invoked in times of need or crisis.
