The name "Palden Lhamo" means "Glorious Goddess", and she is considered one of the most important and powerful protectors of the Buddhist teachings. As a Wisdom Protector, Palden Lhamo is believed to possess great wisdom and skill in removing obstacles and protecting practitioners from negative influences. She is also considered a dakini, a powerful female spirit who is associated with the practice of tantra and the attainment of spiritual realization.

Palden Lhamo is particularly revered in Tibet, where she is considered the potent protector of the Dalai Lama, Panchen Lama, and the city of Lhasa. She is also considered the protector of the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism, which is the school to which the Dalai Lama belongs. Her image can be found in many monasteries and temples throughout Tibet, and she is invoked in many rituals and ceremonies for protection and purification.
