Memento Mori is a phase dating back to Ancient Rome meaning, "remember you must die." The phrase and its associated iconography have been used throughout history to remind us of the transience of life. In Christian art, for example, "Memento Mori" appears alongside images of the crucifixion, alluding to death and resurrection.
"Memento Mori" was prevalent in art from the 16th and 17th centuries, during the Baroque and Renaissance periods. The art form of "Vanitas" emerged during this time, which depicted objects such as skulls, hourglasses, and wilting flowers, all symbols of the fleeting nature of life and the inevitability of death.
