Panjarantha is a figure in Vajrayana Buddhism, a tradition within Buddhism that emphasizes the use of tantra and deity yoga. In this tradition, Panjarantha is revered as an enlightened protector who is able to help practitioners overcome the obstacles that prevent them from achieving enlightenment.
He is often depicted trampling a soul beneath his feet as a symbol of his power to overcome the ego and other delusive states of mind. In his right hand, he holds a flaying knife called a kartrika, which is used to cut through delusions and ignorance. In his left hand, he holds a skull cup called a kapala, which is used to symbolize the impermanence of all things and the importance of facing the realities of death.
