Traditional Li women, from the island of Hainan, design textile patterns using only their imagination and knowledge of tradition. These patterns are passed down from mothers to daughters to record the taboos, beliefs, traditions and customs of the Li culture. Traditional Li textiles were recognized by Unesco in 2009 as in Need of Urgent Safeguarding on their List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
