  • The Stoned Ape Theory, proposed by Terence McKenna in his 1992 book, "Food of the Gods," proposed that psychedelic mushrooms played a pivotal role in the development of human consciousness. McKenna suggests that 100,000 years ago, these mushrooms entered the human diet, which led to the transition from Homo erectus to Homo sapiens and sparked a cognitive revolution.

But why? Humans migrated with cattle, who left behind dung, which sprouted shrooms. Consuming them provided an evolutionary edge for our hunter-gatherer ancestors. McKenna contends that psilocybin mushrooms were an "evolutionary catalyst," giving rise to language, projective imagination, the arts, religion, philosophy, science, and human culture as a whole.
