"The Destruction of Leviathan" is an illustration created by French artist Gustave Dore in 1866. It is a depiction of the biblical story of the defeat of the sea monster Leviathan by the archangel Michael. The artwork shows a dramatic and violent struggle between the massive beast and the angel, with the beast's body draped over rocks in the foreground. The illustration is known for its detailed and dramatic depictions of the sea and it is considered a masterpiece of Victorian book illustration.
The serpent's face is reminiscent of Norse depictions of the Midgard Serpent, defeated by Thor, son of Odin. A similar tale can be found in the Rig Veda, where Indra kills Vritra, the first-born of dragons, with his thunderbolt.
