The Barong is a character from Balinese mythology, often depicted as a lion-like creature. It's considered a protective spirit, invoked to ward off evil spirits and negative energy. The Barong dance is a sacred ritual dance to invoke its protective powers. It is considered to be one of the most important dances in Balinese culture, and is often performed during important ceremonies and celebrations.

In Balinese mythology, the Barong often battles with the witch Rangda, who represents evil and chaos. Rangda, the mother of all leyaks (demon) wants to destroy the village and the people. But with the help of Barong, the village will be protected and the people are safe. The Barong and Rangda dance represents the eternal fight between good and evil and the balance and harmony in the universe.
