The Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) decide to churn the great ocean to acquire the nectar of immortality. However, they realized that this task would be impossible without the help of Vishnu. Vishnu agrees to assist by supporting Mount Mandara on his back while the Devas and Asuras churn. 

As they work, various treasures are discovered, including the goddess Lakshmi, the nectar of immortality, and several divine beings and objects. However, they also stir up a lethal poison called Halahala, which poses a significant threat of total global destruction. In order to save the world, Vishnu adopts his Kurma (tortoise) form and consums the poison, thereby preventing it from spreading.
