The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a monumental bronze statue of Amitābha Buddha and is one of the most famous Japanese icons. It's been designated a National Treasure. Completed in 1252, the original temple was swept away by the great tsunami of 1495, but the Great Buddha weathered the storm. By chanting nembutsu (an invocation of Amitabha), it's believed that anyone can receive the protection of Amitabha Buddha.
